  • Aguiar, Robert - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - carves his art out of wood, paints it, and adorns it with neon tube lighting, thus 'Hallucitainia Artewerks'. The content of his work reflects the psychedelic music of the late 60's and early 70's, like the Beatle's Yellow Submarine and other rock icons such as Jimi Hendrix. The impetus of his work started with "The Chief" in 1992. Within a few months, the Chief was surrounded with an entire 13-ft wall of neon black-lit psychedelic insanity, from a heavily armed junkie monkey to a neon-haired dwarf on a glowing rocket.   • Asheba ó Cultural Stage - Asheba is a very upbeat Caribbean-World Beat singer and songwriter. Asheba means "Creative One" in his native country of Trinidad and appropriately, he loves to improvise. He has released 2 CDís: Asheba Live in New York, and Seekeekey (a bird in Trinidad).   • Austin, Jason - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - Mr. Austin is a self-taught artist using watercolor as his principle medium. "My art is greatly influenced by emotions, music and the beauty I see in every day life," he says. "Art isn't just the piece itself, it's also what you take from it".

  • Bourgeois, Anna Maria - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - "Sewing is her name and fashion is her game" writes her granddaughter, Paris. She has been sewing since her childhood years with a strong focus in fashion. Extremely busy with needles and thread 25 hours a day, 8 days a week, she still finds time to be a loving grandmother to her grandkids, "spoiling them rotten". Successful, independent, friendly and a loving person is how she is described by her "favorite" granddaughter. Her specialty is dolls and clothes with an African American motif and design.   • Burch, Claire - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - is director of the non-profit organization, Art & Education Media Inc. based in Berkeley. Her work has been published in Saturday Review, The New Republic, Mademoiselle, Good Housekeeping, McCalls, Redbook, Southwest Review, Poetry (Chicago) and Arts & Sciences. Her most recent book of poetry is, Homeless in the Nineties. Her numerous video productions include works such as Homeless in the Nineties, and Entering Oakland, a documentary about the problems of African Americans in Oakland with narration by James Baldwin.   • C & M Products/MAAT Science Village - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - Hattie Carwell and her partner, Issac Moore, has toured the country to preserve and present the legacy of Augusta Savage's epic statue of, "Lift Every Voice and Sing". This moving song was written by James Weldon Johnson and has been adopted as the Black National Anthem. Hattie Carwell is a Health Physicist by profession and Chairperson of the Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology which is actively engaged in a national effort to bring more minorities into mainstream science.

  • Cal Wushu Club ó Cultural Stage - A spectacular Chinese Martial Arts demonstration from the traditional to the contemporary. Schooled in the use of 300+ weapons, this groupís performance commands the attention of children, youth, and adults alike. This club is part of the UC Martial Arts Program and is a favorite among the campus youth. (Email: tiyonne@hotmail.com)

  • Camacho, Carey & Hawaiian Dancers ó Cultural Stage - An accomplished singer and musician, this performer has a CD out with a collection of songs and music that will send you to the balmy Pacific Islands instantly. This outgoing and friendly musician will be performing selections from his CD, and will be accompanied by 2 dancers who will provide a beautiful insight into the sights and sounds of the dances of the Pacific Islands.   • The Cerda Project - Cultural Stage - This is a progressive pop band with a touch of jam, accoustical, jazz, rock, old wave, and syncopation. The goal of this group is to put a smile on your face and a tap in your toes.   • Chan, May - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - is a visual artist who works in installation, sculpture, video and performance, and is interested in seeking ways to synthesize these various media. Her inspiration comes from elements of her personal background, such as memories of childhood and family, and from a desire to convey meaning through objects and images common in everyday life.   • Chu, Patty Dancers ó Cultural Stage - Chinese Folk Dancing students performing dances choreographed by Patty Chu. The students have performed in Oakland, San Francisco, and Berkeley for Chinese New Year events and at numerous Festivals in the Bay Area. The Dancers range from age 3-1/2 to 12 years old.   • Di Leo, Paulsteven - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - chose retro elements from the late 1950ís through early 1960ís and portrayed them with bold expression and exuberant color, to depict an era of simplified taste in acrylic painting and pastel. Born in the college town of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Di Leo attended art school at Western Michigan University. There he studied painting, graphic design, and film. Upon receiving his Master of Arts degree, he headed West to pursue a career in acting and music. He has performed as a pop and jazz vocalist at such hot spots as San Franciscoís Bimboís, Venetian Room, and the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.   • Dunwoody, Stephen ó MC at Regatta Stage ó This broadcast announcer is a charter member of the California Dragon Boat Festival and has a commanding voice that is ideal for this event. He has made this festival one of the most professionally run events in dragon boating history.   • French, Leda - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - Ms. French is an artist whose medium is both beadwork and art creations using various techniques in surface design. Inspired by the patterns and rhythms found in nature, this artist received her BA in Art Education with an emphasis in Fiber Arts from San Francisco State University.   • Guangdong Nan-Hai Lion Dancers ó Cultural Stage & Racers - One of Mainland China's finest men's dragon boat team from the city of Nan-Hai in Kuang Tung (Canton) Province are also the Province (equivalent to a State) Champion in Lion Dancing. Their lion dance performance is authentic and dates back thousands of years when lion dancers were required to be acrobats as well as dancers. These highly proficient athletes have come all of the way from the People's Republic of China to race with our local community as part of the international cultural exchange between the Chinese Dragon Boat Association in China and our very own International Dragon Boat Association (producers of the annual California International Dragon Boat Association).

  • Happy Dancers Group ó Cultural Stage - This talented group of 40 students are on tour from all over Taiwan, Republic of China. The group is lead by Ms. Fang-Fang Lu and will be demonstrating the martial art, Kung Fu, and performing Chinese Folk Dances originating from regions all over China. The colorful pagentry and form associated with their performances is classic Chinese.

  • Jue, Richard - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - is an optometrist in private practice in Oakland by day and a visual artist and set designer by night. His main emphasis is oil painting but he also enjoys photography, sculpture and set design. Mr. Jue's dance photography was published nationally and recently he was one of seven Oakland visual artists chosen to show work in the city's inaugural 2000 "Festival at the Alice" at the Alice Arts Center. Most recently, his set design for Facing East Dance & Music's production "Rice Women" received an Isadora Duncan Dance Award nomination for visual design.   • Kang, Kyundae - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - studied art and craft in Japan for 15 years. She is Korean and was raised in Japan. She creates jewelry, decorative boxes, origami, and works with multimedia.

  • Le, Vu X ó Cultural Stage - Rap performer Vu describes himself as an "entrepreneurial dilettante". He likes to dabble in anything and everything. He finds the world a convoluted place and finds beauty in it. His music reflects the world he sees. Vu has a CD currently in production.   • Lee, Clarence - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - is an accomplished fibre artists with an exceptionally high level of expertise and proficiency in the art of basket weaving. His intricate patterns and shapes are reflective of his command of the fibre, and the miniature fibre items he has created are a marvel to behold. (Telephone: 510-568-4360)

  • Lyskova, Tatiana V. - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - A fine art artist and graphic designer, Ms. Lyskova will present her etching work. In 1989 she graduated as a Bachelor of Graphic Design from Moscow Printing Institute, Russia. During her student years she was awarded two times with the Favorsky Scholarship (1988, 89). She is a winner of the Best Design for Poetry award at 'Book of the Year' Moscow, 1992. Tatiana successfully worked in fields of book illustration, print design, typeface design, and web design.   • Mae, Katie - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - will present Japanese Raku ceramics, a low temperature earthenware technique involving a very rapid glaze firing cycle. She was born on the small island of Manhattan, raised 26 stories overlooking the world, Katie Mae ventures to where water meets earth, in land formations, green growth, and the sloppy world of mud. She has inhabited the clay terrain for over ten years, focusing on functional ceramics the first 7 years, and now plies her attention towards sculpture and land art. Her influences are aerial photos of landforms such as the terraced rice fields of Bali, or the brown elephant feet of California hills.   • Matthews, Susan - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - will exhibit paintings representing the Latin and African American cultures in East Oakland. She was born in Tucson, Arizona and at the age of five, her family moved to East Oakland. She attended high school in the Fruitvale district and began learning Spanish as a young child. Ms. Matthews traveled extensively in Latin America, and in 1995, she took her first trip to Cuba to study percussion. She continued to visit Cuba to study percussion and gather images for her current series, which deals with the traditional dance and music of Cuba. She exhibited her work in Havana at Taller GAMA, and at El Museo de la RevoluciÛn. She holds a BFA from U.C. Berkeley and an MFA from San Francisco State University.   • Melody of China - Cultural Stage - Chinese classical, folk, and contemporary music performed by a San Francisco based group of enthusiastic professional musicians from some of the most prestigious music conservatories in China. The ensemble has a twofold mission: to promote Chinese music, and to provide quality entertainment through the synergy between an ancient cultural tradition and the youthful, multicolored American culture. Toward such an end, Melody of China has been busy with regular concert performances as well as presenting a variety of educational programs for both local schools and the community.   • Noel ó MC and DJ at Cultural Stage ó A professional broadcast announcer and DJ, this creative and artistic talent makes a major contribution to the Main Stage.   • OíNami Taiko ó Cultural Stage - This multi-generational Taiko group is one of the most energetic drumming groups in the region.   • Pang, David T. - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - will curate a photo study exploring cross-gender imagery as well as feature his past work in pristine nature photography. Photo-mounted, signed greeting cards will be available at the festival. Mr. Pang is publisher of Tea Party magazine, a community venue for the art and word, based in Oakland. He is co-director of the Wordsmith Series a spoken word venue in partnership between Tea Party and The ARTSHIP Foundation. He is also a licensed civil engineer, a building inspector for the City and County of San Francisco, and is involved in designing large scale public sculpture.   • Riley-Hiscox, Anna - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - an adjunct professor at JFK University in Orinda, CA, Ms. Riley-Hiscox is an accomplished print-maker and talented gourd artist. A past student of the renowned artist Benny Andrews, her work as an art therapist and gourd artist is noted in "Exploring Visual Design: Elements and Principles, Davis Publications," a quality art textbook for students.   • Sefton, Amelia K. (a.k.a. Madame Ovary) - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - provides entertainment for all ages with her handmade puppets, masks, magic wands, crowns, headdresses, angel wings, and other kid-tested items, all crafted from recycled material. Madame Ovary is a puppeteer-storyteller who calls herself "Talespinner Eggstrodinaire" whereas her "eggclectic" collection of "Egg Folk" helps her spin her tales.   • Tea Party Magazine - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - based out of Oakland, this publication features the artistic and creative energy of the Bay Area in the form of essays, interviews, poetry, photography, and fiction. It serves the Bay Area Community by including values and experiences that are transcultural, intergenerational, and educational. At the Tea Party, there is a mutual acceptance of warm tea brought upon our lips, and from our mouths we converse, liberate, and enhance the art of conversation. In addition to the printed publication since 1995, this 'tea party' also expresses itself in art salon meetings, and with the "Wordsmith Series" aboard the world's only floating poetry venue, The ARTSHIP, in Oakland, CA.   • Wiltshire, Irving S. - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - will present "Shapes, Shades and Colors of Nature" photography which was featured at the Rockridge CafÈ in Oakland this year. His achievements include acting for the California Shakespeare Festival in Los Gatos, The Magic Theatre of Berkeley, and performing as an extra for commercials and the NBC TV series, Midnight Caller. He danced with the Gwen Lewis Afro-American Dance Company and the San Francisco Spring Opera. He teaches Black, Ethnic Theatre and Acting at Laney College and Afro-Haitian Dance at the College of Alameda. Recently, Mr. Wiltshire performed for SONY Playstation as a facial expressions model.   • Wong, John - ARTSHIP Artists' Alley - Mr. Wong is a self-taught origamist and was first introduced to it at the San Francisco Chinese Cultural Center where he worked as a volunteer Docent. Following his long career at the Alameda Naval Station, Mr. Wong discovered the ancient art of paper folding and has made it one of his most enduring hobbies. For the past decade, he has demonstrated and displayed his art projects in a multitude of festivals, bazaars, and educational outlets.   • Young, Caroline ó Regatta Room ó Waterfront Plaza Hotel - In classical Chinese painting, artists approach their work in the way pianists approach their compositions.
